Skonflix Overview & Editorial Review
Long before meeting Gru, a unique tribe of Minions led by artistic James, his loyal friend Henry, and deaf Minion Ed accidentally wanders into 1920s Old Hollywood, quickly becoming silent film superstars. However, the sudden arrival of "talkies" ruins their careers due to their unintelligible Minionese language, leaving the trio fired and broke. Determined to rebuild their fame, James uses an ancient spellbook acquired from a former warlock boss to film an independent monster movie titled Minions & Monsters. When a deceitful studio handler tricking the tribe accidentally unleashes a real, multi eyed giant monster named Irene upon the world, James, Henry, and Ed must set aside their movie set ambitions and join forces to stop the mythical creature before Hollywood is destroyed.
Directed by Pierre Coffin alongside co writer Brian Lynch, Minions & Monsters is an animated period comedy produced by Universal Pictures and Illumination. Serving as the third installment in the Minions prequel lineup and the seventh feature overall in the Despicable Me franchise, the film draws heavily on classic monster horror tropes and early cinematic history homage. The project reunited longtime franchise creatives under producer Chris Meledandri, with John Powell composing a dynamic musical score that captures both the vintage 1920s big band jazz style and chaotic creature feature orchestration.
Premiering at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival before its wide theatrical rollout in July 2026, Minions & Monsters proved to be a major box office victory, grossing $480 million globally against an $85 million production budget. Critics and audiences widely praised the film's creative Old Hollywood setting, inventive slapstick comedy, and fresh character focus on James, Henry, and Ed, with many highlighting it as a creative high point for the franchise.
