Skonflix Overview & Editorial Review
When an eleven year old girl named Coraline Jones moves into the decaying Pink Palace Apartments with her emotionally distant parents, she feels completely neglected and lonely in her unfamiliar new surroundings. While exploring the strange old house, she discovers a small, wallpapered secret door that opens into a magical, parallel dimension that seemingly offers everything her real life lacks. In this vibrant mirror world, she meets her Other Mother—a mesmerizing, seemingly ideal maternal figure who wears dark black buttons for eyes and cooks mouth watering meals while lavishing Coraline with endless attention and affection. However, as Coraline continues visiting this enchanted realm, the comforting facade begins to fracture, revealing that the Other Mommy is actually an ancient, predatory arachnid beldam who lures neglected children into her web to steal their souls. Trapped in a terrifying nightmare, Coraline must use her sharp wits, courage, and a mysterious seeing stone to outsmart the demonic creature, rescue the trapped souls of ghost children, and save her real parents before her Other Mother sews buttons into her eyes forever.
Directed and adapted for the screen by stop motion animation master Henry Selick (The Nightmare Before Christmas), the iconic entity known as the Other Mother serves as the primary terrifying antagonist in LAIKA's landmark dark fantasy horror feature Coraline (2009), based on Neil Gaiman's acclaimed 2002 novella. The creative production team spent over two years handcrafting thousands of intricate puppets and detailed miniature sets, utilizing innovative stereoscopic three dimensional cameras to heighten the visual contrast between the drab real world and the alluring, surreal nightmare landscape of the mirror world. Voice actress Teri Hatcher delivered a chilling dual performance, seamlessly shifting her vocal cadence from a warm, soothing maternal tone to a harsh, unnatural rasp as the creature transforms into its true, skeletal, needle fingered form during the climactic battle.
Releasing in movie theaters before launching across home media and digital streaming services including Peacock, Max, Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Google TV, the stop motion masterpiece features an extraordinary voice cast starring Dakota Fanning as Coraline Jones, Teri Hatcher as Mel Jones and the Other Mother, John Hodgman, Ian McShane, Keith David, and Robert Bailey Jr. Cinema critics and animation fans globally celebrated the film for its groundbreaking stop motion artistry, eerie visual design, and unforgettable portrayal of the insidious, terrifying villain. Delivering bone chilling suspense and a timeless story about courage and real maternal love, the cinematic release solidified the Other Mother as one of the most iconic, terrifying figures in modern animated horror history.
