Skonflix Overview & Editorial Review

Dunn, a freelancing debt collector working on the fringes of legality, finds his low key life turned upside down when a portal to hell unexpectedly opens inside a washing machine at his local neighborhood laundromat. Emerged from the vortex, a mischievous demon informs Dunn that his kindly elderly neighbor, Mr. Bobshank, is destined for eternal damnation due to an unpaid spiritual debt. The demon proposes a sinister Faustian bargain: if Dunn delivers three wicked, unforgivable souls to the portal, his neighbor will be freed from being dragged down to hell. Reluctant at first to engage in supernatural hitman work, Dunn resists the agreement until an aggressive debtor follows him into the laundromat and triggers an accidental lethal confrontation. Realizing how easily he can fulfill the quota using dangerous criminals, Dunn navigates a chaotic spiral of dark choices, morality checks, and high stakes bargains to save his neighbor before the underworld comes to collect the debt by force.

Written and directed by Woody Bess in his feature directorial debut, Portal to Hell (2026) is an indie horror comedy feature produced by Ford Films, Hello Moon, and Little Shadows. The creative team built the narrative around a script that earned recognition on the prestigious Black List, opting for practical creature effects, dark visual humor, and neon washed atmospheric lighting within claustrophobic indoor environments. Premiering across notable genre showcases such as the Slamdance Film Festival, Chattanooga Film Festival, and FrightFest, the production earned praise for its inventive indie spirit and grounded combination of supernatural horror with absurd comedy.

Releasing across digital video on demand services including Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Google TV in September 2026 via distributor Cineverse, the genre mashup stars Trey Holland as Dunn alongside horror icon Keith David as Mr. Bobshank, Richard Kind, Romina D'Ugo, and Casey Deidrick. Indie cinema enthusiasts and horror comedy fans embraced the film for its quirky premise, sharp dialogue exchanges, and standout performances from its veteran character actors. Blending absurd demonic logistics with a surprisingly soulful exploration of personal redemption and human mistakes, the release established itself as a fun, memorable cult favorite.
