Skonflix Overview & Editorial Review

Set in the lush, brooding Welsh countryside during the summer of 1976, married musicians Darcy and Daphne Davenport relocate to an isolated rural estate to complete their highly anticipated new folk music album using field recordings of natural sounds. Their creative retreat and fragile marriage are thrown into psychological chaos when Darcy accidentally discovers an ancient, mysterious rabbit trap hidden deep in the surrounding ancient woods and unwittingly disturbs its dark magic. Soon after, the couple is visited by a strange, ethereal child who begins lurking around their property, making eerie requests and playing disorienting musical notes that infiltrate their audio recording equipment. As the line between creative obsession and terrifying folklore blurs, Darcy and Daphne find their relationship fracturing under the weight of buried grief and escalating paranoia, forcing them to confront an ancient, hungry supernatural entity before the trap claims both of their lives.

Directed by Australian filmmaker Bryn Chainey in his feature directorial debut from his own atmospheric screenplay, Rabbit Trap (2025) is a haunting psychological folk horror feature produced by SpectreVision, Elijah Wood, Daniel Noah, and Bankside Films. The creative production team filmed on location across rural Wales, utilizing 35mm film cameras, natural daylight, and low key period lighting to evoke an authentic, grainy seventies aesthetic reminiscent of vintage British horror classics. The sound design department played a pivotal role in building psychological tension, blending real field recordings with an unsettling, avant garde acoustic musical score that turns innocent natural sounds into a suffocating landscape of auditory horror.

Releasing across international film festivals before expanding to digital transactional storefronts—including Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, Google TV, and Fandango at Home—the atmospheric indie horror feature stars Oscar nominated actor Dev Patel as Darcy alongside Rosy McEwen as Daphne, supported by Jade Croot. Horror film critics and indie cinema fans praised the movie for its deliberate narrative pacing, exquisite period cinematography, jaw dropping sound design, and intense lead performances from Patel and McEwen. Delivering an unsettling exploration of creative obsession, marital failure, and pagan folklore, the film established itself as an absolute standout for modern folk horror enthusiasts.
